Principal's Report - Kathy Canavan
Dear Parents/Carers,
Thankyou for preparing your children so well for the beginning of the 2025 school year. It has been a positive start and our learners are adapting well to their new classrooms. The staff kicked off the year with Student Free Days where teachers had time to dive into information about their learners more deeply; further plan their upcoming units of work for Term 1 and attend professional development ready for the implementation of Positive Behaviour for Learning; sessions unpacking First Nations History and Culture and the school priorities for the year.
The 2025 school priorities are:
Educational Achievement: Reflect on current practices in the teaching of Reading to strategically plan its alignment with Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum in English.
Wellbeing and Engagement: Support student well-being and engagement through the implementation of the evidence-based framework of Positive Behaviour for Learning.
Culture and Inclusion: Intentionally and proactively use universal practices to engage and enrich curriculum learning that is accessible, inclusive and inquiry embedded and uses a range and balance of pedagogies. (teaching strategies) |
This week we commenced our planning with staff for our 2025 Reading Journey. As we move to Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum, the foundation research guiding reading instruction is the Science of Reading. Our school currently implements some programs that support a Science of Reading Approach such as Systematic Synthetic Phonics in Prep to 2 and Spelling Mastery in Years 3 to 6. However, we are continuing to refine our practices to further align with the Science of Reading during 2025 and beyond. Please find a link to a recent Twilight Reading Workshop for Parents which provides background information and some useful videos to guide how you can support your child at home particularly if they are beginning readers. We will share more information in future newsletters.

PARENT WORKSHOP TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S ONLINE SAFETY
Last year, our school hosted an online safety workshop which was well attended by a range of parents/carers across year levels. Middle Park State School has invited our community to participate in a similar workshop they are holding in the next couple of weeks.
ThinkUKnow Parent Information Session – Tuesday, 25 February at 6pm in Middle Park State School Hall
The presentation will be delivered by a local law enforcement member (A/Sergeant Ben Harm) and an industry volunteer (Mr Grant Clayton). ThinkUKnow presentations for parents, carers and teachers have been designed to educate about what children and young people SEE, SAY and DO online, the challenges they may face and how they can be overcome. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them to be safe and responsible users of technology. To indicate your attendance, please click on this link.
Have a good week,
Kathy

Celebrating the Opening of Our New Music Room!
Jamboree Heights State School is thrilled to celebrate the official opening of our brand-new Music Room! This exciting addition to our school provides a dedicated classroom music space, an instrumental music area, and a much-needed new storage facility.
A heartfelt thank you to the parents, learners, and community members who supported this special evening!
This project began in 2021 under the leadership of former Principal Cam Wallace and Business Manager Lauren Cawcutt, and we were delighted to see it completed in 2024 under the guidance of our current Principal, Kathy Canavan. The JHSS P&C played an instrumental role in bringing this vision to life, generously contributing $500 000 to make this space a reality.
Special thanks go to P&C executives Jade Lewis and David Gunsberg, as well as our dedicated Music staff, Deb Brydon and Katherine Zorzetto, for their invaluable contributions during the planning and construction phases. This space would not have come to life without their support!
This new facility will enrich the musical experiences of our students for years to come. We can’t wait to see our young musicians thrive in this fantastic space!
Our first P&C Meeting is taking place this coming week on Monday 17th February at 6:30pm. We are looking forward to planning another fabulous year at Jamboree Heights!

Year 2 Poets Shine with Their Creative Adaptations!
This week, our talented Year 2 learners have been exploring poetry, putting their own creative twist on the classic poem Mary Had a Little Lamb. Using their imaginations, they adapted the original rhyme to create fresh and exciting versions of the beloved poem.
It has been wonderful to see our young writers experimenting with rhythm, rhyme, and storytelling in such a fun and engaging way.
Here are two fantastic examples from our budding poets in 2B:
Elsie had a Joyful Bird
Elsie had a joyful bird,
Its beak was sharp as a knife.
And everywhere that Elsie strolled,
The bird got into strife.
Isaac had a Massive Shark
Isaac had a massive shark,
Its teeth were sharp as arrows.
And every day that Isaac swam,
The shark stayed in the shallows.
A huge congratulations to all our Year 2 learners for their incredible efforts in poetry writing this week. Keep up the great work – we can't wait to see what you write next!
Sustainability at JHSS
Thank you to one of our amazing parent volunteers, Clare Hourigan, for being such an active supporter of our school. Clare is a key member of our school’s Sustainability Committee, giving up her time to plan and implement a range of programs to support our gardens. This week, Clare was busy starting the Prep Garden with some of our eager Prep gardeners!

We are always looking for parent volunteers to assist in our gardens, please see the poster below!
Deputy Principal's Report - Lyndel Ivory-Lisle
As we enter Week 3 of the school year, it’s been wonderful to see our new and returning learners settle back into routines with enthusiasm and energy. We appreciate your continued support in making this start to the year so smooth. Our staff are excited and ready to ensure that all learners thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, and we’re excited to continue working with you as partners in your child's education. Please stay connected through our newsletters and social media platforms for updates on upcoming events and initiatives. We look forward to a year of growth, achievement, and success for all our learners.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Our school has started implementing the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework. This evidence-based approach is designed to foster a positive school culture by teaching and reinforcing desirable behaviours, ultimately improving both student behaviour and learning outcomes.
The PBL program focuses on three key goals:
- Enhancing Student Behaviour and Learning Outcomes: By analysing and improving student behaviour, we aim to create an environment that maximises every student’s potential.
- Evidence-Based Support: Our staff will be trained in the latest, research-backed strategies to ensure the best possible support for all students.
- Consistency Across the School: PBL promotes consistent school-wide practices that ensure all students are held to the same high expectations, no matter the classroom or situation.
At the heart of PBL is the clear setting of behavioural expectations and the active reinforcement of positive actions. By fostering a supportive and proactive approach, we aim to create a school environment where students feel encouraged, respected, and motivated to achieve their best.
We believe that PBL will help build a safe, respectful, and engaging environment for all of our students. We look forward to seeing the positive changes this will bring to our school community.
Stayed tuned for the focus of the week, this will be sent out through Weekly Happenings and on Social Media platforms.
Thank you for your ongoing support as we work together to ensure the success of our students.
PBL 2025 Team - Joel Crowe, Inara Wesche, Lyndel Ivory-Lisle, Stephanie Norris, Anna-Kathryn Nagel and Matt Wozencroft. Absent - Kathy Canavan and Nathan Merry

Deputy Principal's Report - Jean Gibbs
Welcome
Welcome to all of our new and returning families to what has been an amazing start to the 2025 school year. It has been wonderful to see all of our learners happy, and settling well into their new routines.
Our youngest and newest learners, our Preps, have started their buddy program with our Year 6 classes and are enjoying learning both inside their classroom and outside. There are some excited, happy but very tired learners at the end of the week!
We look forward to another great year.
Visit by Registered Nurse for Free Prep Vision Screening
Good vision is important for a child’s educational, physical and social development. Vision screening checks for common eye conditions that may impact your child’s ability to see and therefore impact their learning and development.
A Registered Nurse will visit our school on the 10th and 11th of March and on the 18th of March, 2025, to conduct vision screening for children in their prep year. If you wish to have your prep child participate in this free vision screening program, please complete the online consent form prior to 23rd February. The link was sent via email, from your child’s teacher, and a QR code has been placed outside each Prep classroom to assist you with accessing the consent form. Parents do not need to be present for screening.
If your child’s vision is screened, you will be advised of the results in writing. If a vision concern is found, you will receive a phone call from the nurse to discuss referral to an eye health professional for further assessment.
Participation in vision screening is not compulsory. If you do not wish for your child to participate in screening, please complete the consent form and indicate that you wish to decline screening.
If you have any questions, please contact the Primary School Nurse Readiness Program on 1800 687 372.
Grade 1 Learners Explore the Science of Sound with Mrs Zorzetto
Last Wednesday, our Grade 1 learners were treated to a special instrumental music presentation by our instrumental music teacher, Mrs Zorzetto. This engaging session was part of our Science unit on sound, where we are exploring how sound is produced and sensed in different ways.
Mrs Zorzetto demonstrated a variety of instruments, from the small and high-pitched flute to the deep and resonant tuba, helping learners investigate how the size and shape of an instrument affect its pitch. She also showed how different actions—blowing, plucking, and striking—create different sounds. Learners discovered that sound is a form of energy and that using more energy produces a louder volume.
It was a fantastic multi-sensory experience that brought our Science learning to life. A big thank you to Mrs Zorzetto for sharing her time and expertise with us!

NAPLAN 2025 – Wednesday 13 to 20 March
Our Year 3 and 5 learners will again take part in NAPLAN this year, an annual online literacy and numeracy assessment. The test window set will be the 12th to 19th of March.
If your child is taking part in NAPLAN in 2025, they will complete a writing, reading, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy test. These tests will be completed online using iPads via the NAP Locked down browser 2025. All learners will need to have the NAP app downloaded or updated if they have an earlier version.
The main preparation for this test is the day-to-day quality reading, writing and numeracy instruction that occurs in the classroom. With this said, learners do benefit from some familiarisation with the test format and some practice with the different formats and test tools will be provided at school in Term 1. If you would like to help familiarise your child with the test format at home, practice questions can be accessed via the NAP Locked down browser “Demonstration tests.”
For those with learners in Year 3 or 5, further details can be found in the NAPLAN parent information letter.
If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact Alister Warren (awarr26@eq.edu.au).
Thank you to families who have already paid the annual Student Resource Scheme (SRS) payment of $129. For families yet to pay please been reminded that payments are due this Friday 14th February.
The SRS payment includes access for students to access subscriptions such as Reading Eggs, Mathseeds, Mathletics, Ebook and Britannica as well as class science and art consumables.
For a breakdown of what’s included in the SRS for each year level please refer to this link on the schools website: https://jamboreeheightsss.eq.edu.au/support-and-resources/forms-and-documents/student-resource-scheme.
Please be aware the school has been invoiced by the abovementioned app providers for the number of learners that are logged into each app. As such, logins to the above apps are only provided to the learners once the SRS payment is received. Logins for these apps will commence being rolled out next week; to ensure your child/children will have access to the above learning platforms the SRS invoice is required to be paid by the due date.
For the parent or carer who holds the financial delegation on your student accounts i.e. the parent that receives the emailed invoice or can view it via QParents please check your Q Parents app for any outstanding payments. Payments can be paid via the QParents app or you can pay via BPoint link which is printed on the bottom left section of the invoice.
In order to improve transparency regarding student accounts, the administration team will commence issuing monthly debtor statements from this month. Please ensure you check the balance owing on the statement and pay against the original invoice issued by the due date listed. Please refrain from paying the invoice from the link in the statement as this can sometimes result in invoices not matched against student accounts.
If anyone has any questions or requires any assistance with payment of invoices please do not hesitate to email the school administration office team on: admin@jamboreeheightsss.eq.edu.au.
Welcome back to the library!
Welcome back and welcome to our new families. Our school library is open every day before school from 8:15am and both lunch breaks.
At lunchtime learners may come in and read or borrow and we also offer boardgames, colouring and drawing. Soon we will start our computer roster – learners may come in and book a computer to do games such as Minecraft Education.
Before school, all learners are welcome in the library to read quietly, return and borrow books or complete homework tasks, including Mathletics and Reading Eggs homework on iPads.
We have a wide range of books, both fiction and non-fiction catering for our diverse student population.
All learners from Year 2-6 will also have access to SORA (Education Qld ebook library) – for learners new to the school, accounts should be set up by next week.

Who’s who in the school library?

Ms Gwen Edwards – Teacher librarian
I was a classroom teacher at JHSS and other schools for 16 years before moving into the full-time role of Teacher Librarian in 2019. Teacher librarians have dual qualifications. In my case, I studied an Arts Degree in English Literature and Ancient History, then followed this up with a Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Studies, and later completed my Bachelor of Education. I love to study! I am currently completing my Master of Education (Teacher librarianship) online through Charles Sturt University.
The role of the Teacher librarian has evolved over the years with the huge impact of digital technology and the global information society we live in. My lessons range from promoting literature and helping match learners to great books, to information literacy lessons focused on research skills and finding appropriate sources of information, both print and digital and identifying misinformation and “fake news”.
Outside of school I love to read books (of course!) – my favourite genres are historical fiction, crime and mystery and I have a particular interest in First Nations authors and stories. I also love to travel to the UK, Ireland and Scotland researching my family tree.
-
Mrs Melinda Denner - Library Teacher Aide
I have been working in the library since the end of 2023. Every day of the week you will find me in the library for a couple of hours each day. Some of my jobs include adding new resources to our library, mending damaged books, shelving, loaning and returning books for students and staff, and helping set up our library displays. While not working I enjoy reading books (romance, murder mystery, crime, or trying anything with a cool cover), playing soccer, making jewellery, shopping with my daughter and spending time outdoors. I love going on holidays with my husband and 2 kids, mainly to the beach or somewhere with walking or hiking trails. Both my kids went to Jamboree Heights SS, and now attend St John’s Anglican College.
Questions?
If you have any questions about the library or Book Club, feel free to email Ms Edwards – gedwa16@eq.edu.au
You can access our school library catalogue here. Parents are welcome to become library borrowers too. Drop in and see us if you’d like to sign up to be a borrower.
Choirs
We are having 3 choirs at Jamboree this year. Any students in the correct year levels are welcome to join. I do ask that they commit for the year rather than come and go so we can develop our sound together over the year.
Year 4-6 (Senior) Choir is on Tuesday mornings @ 8am in the Music Room. We started this week but it isn’t too late to join! Here is the link to register. There is a cost of $20 for the year. You will be invoiced in a few weeks if you sign up. Singers will need to wear a Music Shirt (available at the uniform shop) and black long pants for performances.
Year 3 Choir will be on Friday mornings @ 8am in the Music Room. We started this week but it isn’t too late to join! Here is the link to register. There is a cost of $15 for the year. You will be invoiced in a few weeks if you sign up. Singers will need to wear their checked school uniform for performances.
Year 2 Choir will begin after the Easter Holidays. More information will come closer to the time. Rehearsals will be at lunch time on Fridays. No need to sign up yet.
Instrumental Music
Welcome to those new to the Instrumental Music Program!
We hope you find a good practise schedule quickly that will work for your family. Remember, whether you are a beginner or a continuing student, if you are struggling or worried about anything please make contact with your teacher sooner rather than later.

A bit of Music Fun
Here are the clips that Year 5 & 6 students have watched recently in Music. We often only watch part of the clip in class due to time constraints and the learners are always asking to watch the rest. I tell them to ask their parents to show them from the newsletter. Why not watch them as a family and share the fun!
Week 1 - The Great Movie Medley - Voctave A Cappella
Week 3 – When The Performance Goes From A Duet, To A Trio, To A Quartet!
Well, it IS a choir, but that’s not all it is! The social and emotional benefits of singing in a choir are huge! Besides that it is a lot of fun.
We have fabulous choirs at Jamboree Heights and have had great first rehearsals singing in our new classroom.
Sports Report - Andrea Dragona
Swimming
Welcome back to all of our learners! We have had a wonderful start to our PE class swimming lessons. Thank you to all of our families for ensuring your child is well prepared for their lessons. Just a reminder, can you please ensure all swimwear, bags and uniforms are named. Changerooms are checked before each break and often at the end of each class. However, learners often struggle to recognise their own equipment so a name or initials makes it much easier to return the lost equipment to their owner. Learners do require their own cap and goggles. If your child is unable to swim, please email their class teacher or send a note to PE with your child.
District Swimming Trials
Last Monday, JHSS had 18 swimmers attend the Northern Eagles District Swimming trials. This is one of the largest teams we have sent to the trials and well done to the following learners who qualified to represent our school: Theo, Lucy H, Lucy L, Laura, Braiden, Vincent, Edith, Layla, Grace, Bridie, Emma, Emily, Will, Hudson, Summer, Taylor, Jack and Cody.

Our learners were complimented by the staff in attendance for their exemplary behaviour and polite manners. There were some fabulous results and a large number of PBs by our swimmers. Nine of our swimmers have qualified for the Northern Eagles District team to compete at the Metropolitan West trials at the end of the month. This is also the largest number of swimmers who have qualified for the Northern Eagles team. Huge congratulations to: Will, Laura, Emily, Jack, Edith, Theo, Summer, Cody and Hudson!
Northern Eagles Sports Trials
Our school is situated in the Northern Eagles district of the Metropolitan West sports region. The Northern Eagles Sports Calendar, with the trial dates for each sport, is on the school website. District trials offer an alternative representative pathway for those learners aged 10-12 who are already participating in a sport at a very high level. Learners must meet the experience and performance criteria to be nominated in a selected sport by the school. Our school carnivals provide an opportunity to qualify for the “Big 3”, Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming.
Running Club
Running Club continues on the oval at 8am on Monday mornings for Year 1-6 learners. Please bring a hat and water bottle. Get prepared for Cross Country in week 8!
Interschool Sport sign up
Our learners in Year 5 & 6 have been signing up for Interschool Sport over the last few days. The sports on offer this semester are: Football (Soccer), Netball, Flag Tag and Cricket. Interschool Sport starts on the Friday of Week 1, Term 2 and runs for 4 weeks. Learners travel by bus to different venues and compete against other schools. Buses return to school by 3pm. No prior experience is necessary!
Welcome to 2025!
Tuckshop will open in week 2. Please see attached the updated menu for 2025. No changes this year, weekly specials are back, for Wednesday - Friday. Additional specials may pop up from time to time so keep an eye out for those. Please see a few notes below of the most common issues that arose last year.
- All orders need to be placed via the QKR! App prior to the 8.30am cut off. Orders can be placed up to 2 weeks in advance. If you miss the cut off sometimes the order will go through on the next available day.
- Every student's class needs to be updated prior to the first order of the year. Qkr! should prompt this. Please ensure you select the correct class as this is where your child's lunch will go.
- Cancellations can be made within the app by going into the receipt prior to the 8.30am cutoff. Any orders requiring cancelling after this time need to be done so by phone before 9.30am.
- ALLERGIES - please ensure you select items that fit your child's food intolerances. By simply notifying of an allergy does not mean the item you have ordered is allergy friendly. Most menu items are labelled with the following GF-Gluten free GFO-Gluten free available DF-Dairy Free DFO-Dairy Free available If it does not have this then no allergy friendly alternative is available. If you are unsure please get in touch. I do not have any nut products in the tuckshop.
- Missing orders - Please advise your child that they are getting tuckshop. If for some reason they don't receive it please let them know to double check with a teacher on duty, and then come directly to the tuckshop so that we can follow up and ensure they get something to eat.
Before School Play
- Before school each day, all students must be sitting in the Junior Shed unless sitting with a parent near their classroom. We insist on NO play on the various playground structures or playing handball before school even if parents are supervising as it entices others to join in, and we have no formal supervision in place before school.
Allergies
At Jamboree Heights State School, we have a number of students who suffer from a range of allergies. For some students, these allergies can be life-threatening. Therefore, we ask the following of parents of children with an allergy:
- Discuss your child’s allergy with their teacher as soon as possible and consider giving permission to share your child’s medical condition with other students and families
- Ensure all medical records are up to date on our school system
- If your child suffers from Anaphylaxis, please ensure their Action Plan and Epi-Pen are current and renewed annually
- Continue educating your child about allergy management
- Plan with the teacher for camps, excursions, sport, cooking at school, and special occasions throughout the year
For all other families, we ask the following:
- Find out from teachers if there is someone with an allergy in the classroom
- Try to consider children with allergies when sending in special treats like birthday food
- Educate your child about allergies, not sharing food, washing hands, and finding help if a friend is showing the symptoms of a reaction
- Be mindful of lunchbox contents such as foods containing nuts and eggs and the impact it may have on children with an allergy. We have a NO SHARING policy!
Finally, our school staff are educated annually on the topic of allergies and also undertake training in the use of Epi-Pens.
Homework
Our school’s policy on Homework:
At Jamboree Heights State School homework will include nightly reading (using appropriate levels and text types) and Computer or iPad tasks such as Reading Eggs, Reading Eggspress, Mathletics, Maths Seeds, Mighty Maths, etc. and occasional alternative tasks such as research, sight words, unit-based tasks, etc. but NO weekly homework sheet or grid, etc. If parents wish for their child to be given NO homework or only certain aspects above, then they can make a formal request in writing (or email) to the teacher. If computer or iPad access at home is difficult then students can make arrangements with their teacher for additional access before or after school or during breaks.

School Payments
Please note that payments must be made by due dates to ensure your child can attend the various extra-curricular events. Departmental financial practice dictates that we must immediately write off invoices for non-payment and therefore notify numbers based on this. At the end of each term we are required to provide Debtor Statements to those with outstanding invoices attached to their account, so it is very important that invoices are removed in a timely manner for each excursion/incursion or event.
Full details of payment methods can be found on the school website.
Messages from Parents
Requests for messages to be relayed to students during school hours, particularly regarding afternoon pickup arrangements interrupt both the office staff and teachers in the classroom. It is a good idea to confirm with your child each morning what the plan is for the afternoon, and have a regular meeting spot for them to go to if they are ever unsure. While some appointments and changes of plans are inevitable, we would appreciate your efforts in keeping these to a minimum.
The Administration email address is admin@jamboreeheightsss.eq.edu.au.

Koala Naming Competition
Our local community is home to two incredibly cute koala joeys, born right here in the Jamboree Ward at Pooh Corner, Wacol. They’re the pride of our area, and guess what? They don’t have names yet.
These joeys were born to our beloved koala parents, “Olive” and “Lady Jane,” around March/April 2024. One of them is a little boy, and both are starting to explore on their own, though still sticking close to Mum. It's a thrilling time for all of us, and we want to make sure our local school-aged children are involved in this special moment.
We’re looking for a list of five (5) boy names and five (5) girl names to choose from – not only for these joeys but for any future little ones that may come along.
We’d love for students to get creative and submit their best name ideas. I will review all submissions and select the top five boy and five girl names. And, of course, there’s a special surprise for the lucky winning names.
Students can register their Koala name suggestions (one boy and one girl name each) at the office by Monday 31st March.
Thank you so much for supporting this fun and meaningful community initiative.
